Selena Belmont
Not much is known about Simon BelmontThe first hero of the Castlevania series (by release date), he's been featured in more games, and referenced more times, than almost any other character in the series.’s story outside of his few games in the series. We know that he fought DraculaThe lead antagonist of the Castlevania series and most famous vampire character in all media, all thanks to Bram Stoker. repeatedly, that the master vampire found ways, time and again, to lure the vampire hunter into his trap, and that each time Simon once again came out victorious. We know he had to have had a family, had kids, and settled down in his life once Dracula was no longer a concern, but unlike with other heroes who came later (in the release schedule of the series), Simon never got the kind of background development that would flesh him out as a person. He’s the most famous hero of the series, but we don’t even know the name of his wife.
Except we kind of do. In the grand chronology of the series, there have been many side adventures and non-continuity titles for the franchise. Games were developed with their own stories and details, not all of which became part of the canon. Is AnnetteThe sister (well, "sister") of Maria Renard. Her exact familial connection to other characters is confused by bad translations across the Western games. She was then reinvented completely for the Netflix series.’s sister Maria RenardA young heroine, and cousin to Richter Belmont, with the blood of the Belmont clan in her veins, Maria teams with Richter to fight back Dracula and the forces of darkness in the late 1700s.? Well, if you play Castlevania: Dracula XThis SNES game was a loose remake of Castlevania Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, and even by the team that made it is considered a non-continuity adventure. she is, even though that’s not acknowledged in current continuity. By that same token, Haunted CastleKonami's first original foray into arcades for the Castlevania series. This game built on the concept of the series although it took some ideas in different directions, with mixed results., the 1987 arcade game that wasn’t exactly beloved by fans, provides a key bit of lore that was ignored by the continuity as a whole… right up until the alternate timeline series Lords of ShadowThe first full reboot of the franchise, the Lords of Shadow series introduced a new hero, Gabriel Belmont, and reimagined villains all in league with a new antagonist, Satan. sort of made it true canon.
Simon Belmont did, in fact, have a wife, and her name was Selena. She’s kidnapped by Dracula, and she serves as Simon’s motivation to go to the vampire’s castle and defeat him (either once more or for the first time depending on if you think Haunted Castle is a remake of CastlevaniaThe game that started the series, the original Castlevania was hailed for its combination of action and platforming, all wrapped in Gothic style, to create one of Konami's earliest Million Sellers. or not). That bit of trivia can, at least, be answered.
Character History:
Haunted Castle
On the day of their wedding, as the happy couple has just left the church and the wedding bells still ring in the air, a man and his wife are confronted by an evil vampire. The foul undead creature appears in the air before them, putting a spell on the woman and whisking her away to his castle. This leaves her husband as the only one brave enough, and strong enough, to take up his weapons to save her. His journey is fraught, with danger around every corner, but he works his way through the vampire’s castle and, eventually, takes on the master vampire himself. Evil vanquished, his wife and saved and the two are able to go off to live a happy life together afterwards.
It’s worth noting that the original Haunted Castle didn’t actually name any of the characters. Because the game came out one year (1987 in Japan, 1988 in the U.S.) after the original NES Castlevania (1986 in Japan, 1987 in the U.S.), everyone assumed that since it was a Konami game about a hero taking on a vampire, the hero was Simon and the villain was Dracula. This wasn’t made explicit in the game, though, and only came up in a help video, Konami Best Selection, released separately. For most fans, the hero’s wife was simply known as “that dude’s wife”.
Of course, there are other sources that contradict this bit of trivia. A Worlds of Power novel based on Castlevania II: Simon's QuestThe first true sequel in the franchise, and one of the few direct sequels ever released. It was the first game in the series to introduce players to the concepts that would eventually become the Metroidvania genre. states that Simon had a girlfriend (not a wife), and her name was Linda Entwhistle. Naturally, don’t take anything in a Worlds of Power book seriously as those books were written as very loose adaptations of video games, making up their own continuity for titles as they went along. You should also ignore the Choose Your Own Adventure style game book The Demon Castle Dracula: The Battle of Old Castle, as that was an even more loose work based on the Castlevania series, turning Simon Belmont into a young actor playing a vampire hunter, who has a girlfriend named Mina who gets caught up in a sudden appearance of Dracula on set. It’s all very silly.
In fact, we could likely even ignore Selena has the name of Simon’s bride (if we even accept his name is Simon), were it not for a later, alternate continuity game that helped to bring her original name back into the collective Castlevania consciousness.
Lords of Shadow History:
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate
Okay, so it’s a stretch to actually include Selena Belmont here as well. She technically doesn’t show up in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate, or any of the other Lords of Shadow games for that matter. But the official The Art of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow makes mention (not a drawing, just a casual reference) of the fact that Simon is married and her name is Selena Belmont. This is, of course, just as small of a reference to this fact as the help video was back in 1987, meaning it’s questionable continuity at best.
And yet, two different official works from Konami, for two different pocket continuities, have listed Selena as Simon’s wife. Until such time as Konami contradicts this, that makes Selena as close to a real answer to “who was Simon’s wife” as anything else we can come up with. True continuity? Probably not. But a good enough answer all the same.
