Praise Be

We got this girl. Nice girl, kinda sheep like though, what with being a fundamentalist Christian and all. She really loves God and Jesus (who I guess are the same thing to Christians) and she tries to do right by Him. So, when she finds out her boyfriend is gay, she tries to think of ways to make him not gay... which eventually leads her to deciding to sleep with him.

Well, he's still gay afterwards, but now, she's pregnant as well. Crisis of faith time. Well, if that didn't work, and she thought it was what God would want, is there really a God, yada yada yada. You can see the path she's gonna go down. She gets aided by the two other people in her Christian school with open minds (one of whom is Jewish). Hilarity ensues.

Saved! is a comedy with a message. Of course, it's not the "just love God and everything works out" message that so many "christian flicks" have. No, you can tell that this movie was written by someone that was fundamentalist long ago, but got better. I think they're called "recovering Christians." Saved is a satire, a movie that pokes fun at fundamentalists, while in the end supporting the view of "love everyone and be kind, as that's what's most important."

Normally I aint much for movies that end all happy-sappy, and yes, at times this movie is able to tread into that territory. It's also at times a little formulaic, but it's strengths lie in the satire and the acting. You'll laugh a lot at this movie just do to the sheer amount of "can they seriously be that closed-minded" humor and situations. Now, for those that are fundamentalists out there (how the hell did you find my website?) you probably won't like this movie. Although, if you really pay attention, you may just start thinking about your own religion, which is cool. Try it on for size.

The acting is superb. We got Jena Malone, who I know has been in some other shit (but I never bother looking stuff up). There's the Jewish chick, who's also goth, and pretty darn hot. Plus she's mean and funny, and there's a certain depth to the character that she conveys. Maculay Culkin turns in a good role as the handicapped brother of the school "queen" who I think is Mandy Moore. Actually, of all people, I tended to pay the least attention to Mandy. Her character was too cookie cutter for me and grew the least overall.

It's a fun and funny flick that hosts a decent message. I aint much for message flicks in general, but this one wasn't too bad at all.
