Two Reviews Done at Different Times

I'm gonna start this off by stating that these two reviews originally were on separate pages. I just combined them onto one page for ease of viewing

Hey guys! Just got back from "Jay and Silent Bob" and I first off have to say the movie rocked... Okay, so I have been known to say that about a lot of movies...

It's sad really when you think about it. The New Jersey Saga is over. "Jay and Silent Bob" marks the last outing for the two stoners (unless they make more cameos like they did in "Scream 3"). So, this movie has a lot to live up two. It has to rival all the previous movies and close out the series in such a way that every fan boy (yeah I am among them) will be happy. And to be honest, it does and it doesn't...

First off, the premise (a glossed over version, Spoiler Free, and actually containing little or no comment and more asides than anything else... where was I going with this?): Jay and Silent Bob, after talking to Banky (yeah, the guy from "Mallrats") find out that there is a movie being made about the comic Bluntman and Chronic. They want their mad cash (as it serves the plot line). From Holden (one of the two creators of the comic, which as if I didn't have to remind you played heavily in "Chasing Amy") they learn that through the magic of the Internet, stupid little pipsqueaks all over the world are picking on them because "Jay and Silent Bob are ball lickers". So they decide to go to Hollywood to stop the movie from being made. And that is just the first 15 or so minutes.

The Good: Well, like very Kevin Smith flick, "Jay and Silent Bob" is funny. It has the same classic humor we all come to expect, and plenty of Star Wars references. The humor is fresh, not falling into the same pitfalls many comedies do borrowing too much humor from it's predecessors. In fact, thinking back on the plot, I can't say I have seen a movie exactly like this before. The closest I can think is "Mallrats" as it is a movie that really is more or less hilarious scenes strung together by a simple plot (much like "Mallrats"). And there is enough humor that relates to all the previous movies to keep all the fans happy.

The Bad: At times the movie is way too over the top. WAY TOO over the top (scenes featuring Carrie Fischer, George Carlin, and Mark Hamil to name a few). Also, I myself didn't like some of the playing around with the continuity. At times it seemed like he was both acknowledging the previous movies as well as saying they also never happened ("Dogma" and "Chasing Amy" more than the other two). And, some of the running jokes just didn't work for me too much. They were directly borrowed from other movies and TV shows and really didn't seem necessary... At least to me anyway.

On the whole, though, the movie is great. Aside from my minor gripes, it does wrap up the series nicely. A couple suggestions: Look for an appearance by "God" (of course that being Alanis Morrisette), and definitely stick around till the very end of the credits.

Anyone that's read this site (which as I know, is honestly very few people), will remember that I wrote a "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" review back on the weekend it came out (oh so long ago)... That was supposed to be the launch of my movie review section... but then two things happened: 1) as always, I got lazy and 2) I realized the old review was barely better than utter crap... So yeah, time to redo that one. What you have on your screen is my attempt at a better review of that movie. Enjoy.

Well, when the movie came out, I raved and ranted about how funny it was, and how good it was... Not that I take back that it was good and funny, but not to the degree I once thought... I have seen it like three more times since the first night, and now the movie just feels weak... I guess in part it's cause I rate a movie in part on if you can view it again and again. Movies like the Matrix, Scream, and Crouching Tiger (wow, there's a collection of movies right there) are good enough at what they do to compulsively make you watch them again... and again... Jay and Bob lacks that. It's funny without being funny enough. At times it's too raunchy, at others it just falls flat on it's face...

Basically, the idea of the movie is that the comic book based upon Jay and Silent Bob (the characters from the New Jersey Saga) from the movie "Chasing Amy" is being made into a movie in "Jay and Silent Bob." For their own inane reasons (and I use inane, cause honestly Jay and Bob are morons, big lovable morons), they decide to go to Hollywood and stop the flick. From here we are treated to a road trip movie full of laughs and... uh... pot jokes, wrong humor, and everything you'd expect from a Kevin Smith film. What is missing from the movie is the ability for all the parts (the plot, the humor, the cameos [and there are a lot of cameos]) to gel into a strong movie. What we end up with is... a not so strong movie...

In the end, this movie is a toss up. Go watch it. If you like Kevin Smith films, you'll get at least a kick out of it if nothing else...

The Good: Some very funny, very crude moments as only Kevin Smith can do.

The Bad: Weak plot, some flat jokes, and a feeling like the movie never gels.
